Harlequins case study

Case Study: Powercor installs UV-C disinfection lighting at Harlequins in rugby first

About The Stoop

‘The Stoop’ is the home of English Gallagher Premiership Rugby Union Club, Harlequins. Based in Twickenham, South-West London, the stadium has a capacity of 14,800. The Honours Bar is used as a reception and conference suite for up to 250 people, but also acted as the player’s dressing room during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary of Project

At the start of 2021, Harlequins became the UK’s first professional sports club to install UV-C disinfection lighting.
Harnessing the power of Philips UV-C air disinfection technology, Powercor installed 11 upper air disinfection units in the Honours Bar at The Stoop to further ensure the welfare of players and supporters in the battle against the spread of COVID-19.

Benefits of Powercor’s project

  • Helps protect the health of players, members and spectators.
  • Disinfects air within the Honours Bar whilst in use.
  • Reduces virus infection risks.
  • Inactivates 99% of known viruses and germs in seconds.

Customer challenge

Harlequins is committed to providing players and supporters with the highest health and safety standards when they visit their club. Given the rise of COVID-19, they needed an additional layer of protection to the stringent testing and operational processes in place to protect the squad.

Solution

In partnership with Signify, Powercor’s fully trained staff installed 11 upper-air disinfection units in the Honours Bar at The Stoop. At the time, the bar was serving as the teams’ dressing room due to COVID-19 restrictions and therefore the players were the first to benefit from the new safety measures.

Each disinfection unit is suspended by brackets 800mm from the ceiling, with potential for more to be installed in other parts of the club at a later date. The system disinfects air as it circulates the room, even when there are people present below. Natural convection moves the disinfected air back into the lower part of the room. In laboratory testing, Signify’s UV-C light sources reduced SARSCoV-2 virus infectivity on a surface to below detectable levels in as few as ten seconds. [1]

While the system will protect the players during the pandemic, it will subsequently provide protection for the club’s members once they are able to attend future fixtures.

[1] Tested Signify germicidal UV-C light sources on SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The team applied a dose of 5mJ/cm2, resulting in a reduction in the virus of 99% in 6 seconds. Based on the data, it was determined that a dose of 22mJ/cm2 will result in a reduction of 99.9999% in 25 seconds.
