LED or Fluorescent lighting? Why LED is the way forward

The big question for many businesses is why move over to LED when they currently have a functional site which runs off the likes of T8 Fluorescent’s.

The simple answer is that it costs a lot less to run LED lighting with savings of up to 60% compared to the florescent’s counterpart…additionally there are big costs savings on the maintenance factors.

Depending on hours usage per annum, LED lights can potentially run without additional capital expenditure maintaining the lights for 15 years.

Why are Florescent’s are a dying breed?

  • Failure when switching
  • They emit Ultraviolet light
  • Ballasts can buzz causing failures
  • They’re not efficient at very high or low temperatures
  • Non directional

What is LED?

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a two-lead semiconductor light source. It is a junction diode, which emits light when activated. When a suitable voltage is applied to the leads, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence, and the color of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy band gap of the semiconductor.

Why is LED is the way forward?

  • Up to 75000 hour life
  • Do not mind dimming
  • Vast array of light colours and lumen outputs
  • Becoming very affordable
  • Extremely reliable
  • Controls of LED much simpler
  • LED lights do not have any real restrictions apart from they will require a capital outlay initially unless financing options are used.

An LED upgrade gives the once complicated and rather expensive lighting project a new dimension with the vastly improved reliability of technology – meaning that dimming, design & control is readily available at a great pricing.
