Emergency Lighting upgrade to provide safe spaces for education
City of Oxford College is a further education college in Oxford, England. It has two campuses: the City Centre campus in Oxford city centre, and the Technology Campus in Blackbird Leys, south-east of Oxford city. Previously called Oxford and Cherwell Valley College (OCVC), it changed its name in 2013 when the Oxford and Cherwell Valley College Group restructured and became Activate Learning Group.

OUR APPROACH AND IMPACT
The college’s Emergency Lighting system was outdated creating a number of challenges including a lack of regulatory compliance, unacceptably high maintenance costs and a testing and compliance process that was cumbersome and ineffective.
The college was looking to improve the situation to address the above challenges and properly protect staff, students and site visitors.
Oxford College appointed emergency lighting specialist, Powercor and their technology partner Clevertronics, to supply and install a state-of-the-art emergency lighting system into their sites.
The system supplied included new energy-saving luminaires combined with L10 Lithium Nanophosphate batteries, creating a robust and money-saving system. Zoneworks XT HIVE connects light fittings via Dynamic Self-Managed Meshing for fully integrated control.
Maintenance would be minimal as a result and all monitoring managed remotely with automated immediate flagging of any issues if they did occur. Gone were the days of a technician having to visit the site and inspect every emergency light individually.
Compliance reporting is also now automated, saving the facilities team considerable time and effort over the course of a year.
Fully compliant
Fully compliant to BS5266 and Compliant with BS EN50172 regulatory testing
Cost saving
75% maintenance costs saving
Sustainable design
Less landfill due to 80% longer life batteries than NiCD
Better technology
12+ year battery life expectancy
The building estate that is managed and supported by Activate across the region is vast. Making sure that we are doing everything we can to minimise maintenance costs while remaining compliant and safe is something that we will always make the necessary changes to achieve. Investment in education is their No. 1 priority.”
